Sculptor Eva Hesse (born today in 1936) passed away at only 34 from a brain tumor. Days after her death, good friend and artist Sol LeWitt created Wall Drawing 46 (above, right) in honor of Hesse. LeWitt, know at the time for graphite linear drawings, incorporated the image of hanging strings in #46 – for the first time gravitating away from the straight line and forever commemorating Hesse.
