Rothko created 14 large, dark paintings for the Rothko Chapel at the end of his life. The chapel was conceived to be Roman Catholic. Rothko hung three large tryptichs in the chapel to represent the crucifixion. “The effect is to surround the viewer with massive, imposing visions of darkness.” Wikipedia
